The Six Rules For Success – Rule #1 of 6

This is the first post in a series on the rules for success. Yes, there are specific elements or laws that you must follow to be successful! The good news is that these rules are quite simple and I’ll provide a quick overview of each one. Like most things in life, the most effective things are often the simple things. However, just because it’s simple does not necessarily mean it’s easy. The first step is to understand what the rules are and how to apply them to your life. These will also give you a good overview of the six elements in the SHARK Belief Success process.

Rule For Success #1 – Set Your Aim!

The first rule for success is to clearly define what you want. That’s right! You have to start by defining your goal. It sounds obvious, but the truth is that the vast majority of people never set clear goals. I meet people all the time that tell me they want to be successful, yet, when I begin to pry a little more into their goal, it’s clear that they have no idea what success means to them or what their goal really is. I hear phrases like, “I just want to have enough money to be comfortable” or “I want to start a business that lets me travel and work when I want.” It’s just like when someone says they want to “get in better shape” because they feel unhealthy. Yet, getting in shape is not a clear and definite goal. How will they know when they are in shape? Does that mean loosing 5 pounds, 10 pounds or 30 pounds? Perhaps it has nothing to do with loosing weight but is in reference to increasing endurance. Does being in shape mean they can run a marathon or just go hiking without feeling like they just climbed Mt. Everest!

Set a Clear and Specific Goal

The point is, you have to clearly define your goal and know exactly what success means to you. To some, success means starting a new business that allows them to quit their job within six months. For others, success is earning $150,000 a year. And for many more, success has nothing to do with money. What does success mean to you? A good test to determine if you have a clear enough vision for success is to answer the following questions: How will I know when I have been successful? What will my life look like? The answer to that question will force you to consider the details behind your ambition and the types of results you want to see. It will also challenge you to set a timeline for reaching your goal. In my book the SHARK Belief Success Code, I go into detail on how set a clear and defined goal. That is the importance of Aim within the SHARK Belief Success Code.

Put Your Goals In Writing

Finally, once your goal is defined, you must put it in writing! This is probably one of the most important rules for success. We all have ideas behind what we want to achieve but forcing yourself to express that in a clear written statement will add clarity to your goal and begin to make it real. Writing down your goal is the first step to giving life to the ideas you have in your head. Read it regularly to stay focused on your aim. This critical step will help you make progress toward the other five rules for success. You can adjust it later as you need to. You will also find that as you grow, your goals will become increasingly bigger and personally meaningful. You can always set more goals, but start with just one and focus on it until it’s accomplished. Remember, Rule #1 for success is know what you want.
