6 Things That Are Critical for Reaching Your Goals in 2016

The New Year is always a time for us to reflect on last year’s accomplishments. Perhaps you had a banner year and couldn’t be happier with your results. Perhaps you started off strong but for one reason or another you fell short of your goals. I had some great accomplishments this year but like most people, I’ve also had a few goals that fell short of my desired outcome. Whichever side you fall on, let the New Year offer you a fresh start on your goals and plans for the future! Remember to take stock of the lessons learned from the year prior and don’t be afraid to do things a little differently going forward.

Before you get too far on working towards your goals for 2016, here are 6 things you absolutely need if you want to be successful. You will also need these a few months into the process as they will help you to stay on track. What are these 6 critical elements? They are the same six elements needed for success in anything and are the core of the SHARK Belief approach. These areas are Skills, Habits, Aim, Relationships, Knowledge and Belief. Let’s take a closer look at each one.


1.  Skills

Every goal will require that you use some sort of skill or technique. Simple goals may only require just one skill while other more complex goals, such as launching a startup, will require you to have a number of key skills. The most successful among us are also some of the most highly skilled and skills are key to success in anything. The good news is that skill is not the same as inborn talent or God-given ability. All skills are learned and developed which means you too can acquire new skills. Could a lack of skill been the reason for coming short last year? How about going forward, what skills or techniques are needed to successfully accomplish your goal? If you had to pick just one, which one skill would make the most impact toward reaching your goal this year? That’s the one skill you should focus on developing next.


2.  Habits

Success also requires us to have good habits and routines. Tony Robbins says the one of the key differences between the successful and those who fail is their rituals. One person will have the habit of hitting snooze 5 times while another has the habit of getting up early for personal development activity. One person will read their goal every morning while another has the habit of checking their Facebook first. The point is that habits rule our lives and a large part of what we do every day is done on autopilot or out of habit. Habits are powerful due to their compounding effect on our lives over the long-term. If you want to successfully reach your goals, then you need to establish some new habits that will facilitate your success by helping you stay on track all year.


3.  Aim

Aim is simply your goal or focus. We all need goals and a goal is much more than a dream or a wish. It needs to be specific, detailed and most importantly, it must be written down! A good way to know if you have a clear goal is to answer the following questions. How will I know if I have accomplished my goal? What does reaching my goal look like? Aim is about making it concrete and then reviewing it regularly. Most people write down their goals in January and only look at them again in December. Keep your goals front and center by reviewing them DAILY.


4.  Relationships

The best way to get started on any goal is connect with someone already doing what you want to do and learn from them. How are they doing it? What skills or habits do they have? Every goal will require you to cultivate some key relationships and this is especially critical for anyone setting really big goals. Even if all the work depends on you doing it, you still need mentors, coaches and mastermind groups. Another thing to consider is that there may be some people you need to spend less time with because they are preventing you from reaching your goals.   Seek out motivated, ambitious and supportive people and you will have a better shot at reaching your goals.


5.  Knowledge

In today’s world, there is no shortage of information available to us instantaneously. However, information is not the same as knowledge. To be successful in reaching your goals, you should immerse yourself with information that is specific to your goal so that you gain a better understanding of what it takes to accomplish your aim. We never truly “know it all” and some things are worth being reminded of from time to time. Become an expert in your domain and never stop learning. Knowledge is power, but only when it drives specific and focused action.


6.  Belief

Reaching your goals will certainly require massive physical action on your part, but you also need to constantly work on your success psychology to ensure your mindset is conducive to reaching those goals.  Students of the Law of Attraction and visualization techniques know just how powerful our minds are.  The truth is, everything begins in our mind and your thoughts will ultimately form your reality.  To reach your goal, you first have to “see” yourself accomplishing it in your mind and you also have to believe that you can do it.  Not mere wishing or hope, but truly believe it will come to pass.

You also have to believe that you are capable of learning new skills, building new habits and connecting with the people necessary to accomplish your dreams. This will be especially critical during those times of set-back or temporary defeat because strong beliefs will help you persevere.  We all have some limiting beliefs that need to be replaced with empowering beliefs. Thing such as the fear of failure, fear of criticism or lack of self-confidence can mean the difference between success and failure.  Our mindset is so powerful and plays a huge role in our success that neglecting this one area can undo all the hard work you’ve put into the other five areas we just covered.  As Earl Nightingale aptly put it, “We become what we think about most of the time…We are all self-made, but only the successful will admit it.”


SHARK Belief for Success
